The City of Charleston seeks an experienced attorney to provide legal advice and legal services primarily to the Chief of Police and Police Department. Duties and responsibilities include: assisting in developing law enforcement policies and procedures; providing legal advice on a variety of legal issues involving constitutional and statutory matters; assisting Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in developing criminal cases; representing the City in legal proceedings, including the prosecution of criminal violations in municipal court and asset forfeiture cases; providing legal advice on matters raised in state and federal court cases involving Police Department; assisting Police Department in responding to Freedom of Information Act requests and subpoenas; investigating personnel matters; assisting in preparing business contracts and administering other legal matters; drafting ordinances, legal memoranda, correspondence and reports; attending City Council meetings, City Council Standing Committee meetings, neighborhood meetings and other meetings as needed to perform essential duties and responsibilities; and performing other duties as assigned. Requires: Juris Doctorate Law degree (J. D.) and a minimum of ten (10) years in the practice of law with emphasis on criminal prosecution and law enforcement matters. Experience at state or federal level preferred. Public speaking and presentation skills are required. Must be member in good standing with South Carolina Bar. Valid state issued driver's license required.
